Yoga in Leigh
With Yvonne Booth and Mike Elliott
Hi yoga friends. Here’s an update to say that classes will run as usual on the same days, but will take place online via zoom (or sometimes in Chakwell Park by the pond if sunny). So drop me a line if you’d like to join me and I’ll give you the details and help talk you through how the online classes will work. Rest assured we’ll keep it as simple as possible for you. Tomorrow I’ll be adding a new page on the site showing you how to use zoom. It’s very easy and also free.
One to one Yoga or Meditation session will continue over skype or zoom. So just be in touch if you are interested. I’m here and not going anywhere!
Keep a check on our site each week for updates.
Yvonne and Mike offer small and friendly, authentic Yoga and Meditation classes and private one to one sessions in Central Leigh-on-Sea.
The physical postures are just a part of what the practice of Yoga has to offer. Yvonne and Mike offer a rounded practice of physical postures, breath work, meditation and philosophy.
Yvonne gently encourages everyone to work to their own ability and so provides simpler or more advanced versions of the practices depending on each students experience and how they feel from week to week.
Classes are small, relaxed and informal and suitable for every ability, including absolute beginners.
They take place at the Friends Meeting House, 18, Dundonald Drive, Leigh on sea, SS9 1NB – a beautiful, warm and quiet space overlooking a lovely garden, which we sometimes use in the summer.
Yvonne offers one to one’s and morning and evening drop in classes for Men and Women of all abilities. She is a Hatha yoga teacher, qualified with the British wheel of Yoga and the Independent Yoga Network and has been practicing yoga and meditation for over 25 years and teaching since 2005.
Mike is a Mindfulness Meditation teacher (PGQ Bangor) with over 25 years experience; he offers meditation 1-1’s and meditation, relaxation and gentle movement, morning and weekend classes.
“Yvonne’s classes are more than just a fitness class – she introduces you to the background and the true meaning of yoga and the classes are friendly and relaxed.
The classes have an even gender split and people are encouraged to work to the best of their ability without feeling inadequate.
All of this results in comfortable, non exclusive classes – a testament to Yvonne’s non competitive, unpretentious approach.”
“A very helpful class for taking yoga and mindfulness principles off the mat and into our everyday lives. Mike’s inclusive approach means that everyone can benefit – much wisdom there”

The system of Yoga originated in India 5,000 years ago. The Sanskrit word ‘Yoga’ translates as ‘Union’.
My classes unite physical postures (Asana) with breath practices (Pranayama), relaxation and meditation.
Some of the benefits are:
Yoga Asanas (postures)have an all-pervading effect on the physical, mental and subtle functioning of the body. We cultivate a deep strengthening, stretching and relaxing the of skeletal, muscular, digestive, cardio-vascular, glandular and nervous systems and along side this a strong, healthy immune system.
Although breathing is a natural function, tension tends to interfere with the breath. Using pranayama (yogic breath techniques) we learn to breath well - directing the breath, feeling it in different parts of the body and in the global sensation, in this way we greatly strengthen our immune system, calm the mind, stimulate and direct the body's energy and help prepare ourselves for meditation.
As the postures, breathing and meditation become experienced and understood, there is a gradual and natural unfolding of a quite and a peaceful mind, and with it a new alertness and sense of balance. Meditation shifts your focus from thinking to just being, allowing more awareness of yourself and everything around you to naturally arise.
